Keltoi Celtic Living History is a small group located in Horsham, Western Victoria. We focus on the culture of the Eburone tribe in 57BC. This is a period of turmoil. Our kings, Ambiorix and Catuvolcus, have initiated a rebellion against the Romans Wintering at Aduatuca.
We have a focus on traditional crafts of the period, and learn combat skills in preparation for our Roman and tribal enemies. Keltoi maintains a strict authenticity policy and strives for high standards in the clothing and tools owned and used by members. Keltoi was founded by Andy Malcolm in late October 2007.
Group Aims Keltoi aims to authentically and accurately portray a small tribe of Celtic people living within the Belgae region of Gaul, 57BC, during the end of the Gallic War period. As a group, members are encouraged to adopt an alter persona with which to base their Celtic kit and clothing on. Members are also encouraged to pursue and specialise in a craft, be it blacksmithing, jewellery casting, wood work, ceramics, weaving, bone carving, barding, or even one of the many forms of combat.
What We Do Keltoi meet every Monday night at Green Lake (10minutes south-east of Horsham) between 6pm and 9pm for crafting and combat workshops. During Winter we can be found at the Horsham North Primary School Gym. You may find someone sitting down sewing up a tunic by hand, others practising sword and shield while others practise their skills with the spear. Some may even be there for a chat about ancient Celtic history retelling the deeds and battles of Celts and Romans. Amongst us are a range of skilled people and artisans, from blacksmiths, bone carvers, wood workers, potters, and combatants. Come and learn or come and share your skills!
Who Can Do It? We accept people of any age or gender providing that you are aware that the activities of Keltoi take place outdoors during the daylight savings period in weather which can reach 40 degrees plus.
Membership Requirements Membership to Keltoi is free and is given when the individual has acquired for themselves a basic Celtic kit that is of a high quality. This basic kit consists of the following items: tunic, braccae, belt, and feasting gear (spoon and bowl) these items must be made from authentic materials such as linens and wools, with vegetable tanned leather. In addition to the basic kit membership will also only be given through displayed commitment to improving upon this basic kit.
We also have a single group membership policy, meaning that termination of other group membership must be provided before joining Keltoi, and that a group Waiver be signed before any participation in Keltoi activities takes place.
Beginners Workshops As a new comer to Keltoi we will ensure you are provided with ample help and support in making or purchasing your Celtic kit items. For the first 10 weeks you will be guided through a set outlined schedule of workshops aimed at getting you started on making your Celtic kit items as well as learning the basics of Celtic warfare. You will also be provided with our Keltoi Members Handbook which outlines all Membership requirements, group aims and objectives, as well as providing you with historical information on the period.
